What Were the ὀθόνια in the Gospel of John?

This paper argues that Othonia in John’s Gospel refers to linen burial cloths, not bandages, aligning with first-century Jewish custom. Drawing on archaeological and linguistic evidence, it distinguishes othonia from the restrictive keiria of the Lazarus narrative. The study demonstrates that the orderly arrangement of the cloths in John 20, with the face cloth folded separately, constitutes crucial narrative evidence. This evidence makes the empty tomb intelligible and serves as the basis for the Beloved Disciple’s faith, rendering John 20:8 narratively coherent.
