Course Descriptions

The Postgraduate Certificate in Shroud Studies is a two-semester program with examinations. Classes are held online.

This course provides a comprehensive overview of sindonology (the study of the Shroud of Turin). The first part examines the imprints and traces on the Shroud, scientific research, preservation, connections with the Gospels, the relationship between science and faith, and teaching approaches. The second part delves into the Shroud’s textile characteristics, its history with emphasis on the Way of the Cross, and explores “the Shroud and evangelization” through the work of Mons. Giulio Ricci and Mother Maria Elisabetta Patrizi, founders of the Roman Center of Sindonology.

This course begins with an analysis of the Shroud’s religious and historical complexities. A dedicated lesson will cover the correct methods for studying the Shroud, followed by an overview of key historical periods from the 14th century onward, focusing on its official appearance in Europe. The final lessons address specific topics, including unique devotional practices linked to the Shroud, the positioning of Jesus’ burial cloths as described in the Gospels, the Roman flagrum used in the scourging, and the Shroud’s influence on Christ’s iconography.

While empirical science provides important insights on the Shroud, understanding the Passion of Jesus requires divine revelation as received by the apostles and passed down by the Church. This course examines the biblical theology of the Passion of Christ using the four canonical Gospels as primary sources. The course bridges scientific observation and theological interpretation, teaching students what Christ suffered and why he did so.

The first part of this course provides an overview of the STURP team, including its formation, preparation, their 1978 examination of the Shroud, and their scientific findings that form the foundational database of credible knowledge supporting the Shroud’s authenticity. The second part focuses on post-STURP Shroud research, covering key events like the 1997 Turin Chapel fire, the 2002 restoration of the Shroud, recent research developments, and the impact of the internet on scholarly communication.

This course provides an overview of the tortures inflicted on the Man of the Shroud in the historical context of tortures in the ancient world. The course focuses mainly on Roman flagellation and crucifixion, along with Jewish burial traditions. Topics are analyzed both scientifically and historically, with a particular emphasis on Jewish culture and Talmudic literature.

This course is a series of conferences coordinated by a professor.
