A Very Faint Image

String 02

Quick Facts

  • The image only discolors the very outermost microscopic fibers of the linen threads.
  • When you look at the cloth up close, the image almost disappears. When you shine a light behind the cloth, the image disappears completely.

No one has been able to reproduce this image with all its unique properties.

The image on the Shroud is remarkable. It does not penetrate the threads, but rather “sits” on the very surface of them.

Each linen thread on the Shroud is made up of dozens of microscopic fibers. Scientists have discovered that the image only darkens two to four of the very outermost fibers. That’s less than half the diameter of a human hair. The image does not even penetrate the cell wall of the discolored fibers.

Even more fascinating is how the image behaves under light. When viewed up close, it nearly disappears. If you shine a light through the fabric, the image vanishes completely and you only see the bloodstains.

And here is where the mystery deepens – the image wasn’t painted, burned, or applied with any known artistic method. The image has no brushstrokes, no dye, no paint, no stains – nothing that indicates human artistry.

Despite modern technology, no one has been able to replicate the image.

The scientists in the STURP team did extensive research on the Shroud and reached a bold conclusion: the image is not the work of an artist.

So who – or what – created this image? Science has yet to provide a definitive answer, leaving the mystery unexplained.
